The impact of caring on caregivers’ mental health: a review of the literature

This paper offers a concise review of the literature on the effect of treatment on the mental health of informal providers in the fields of age, disability and mental health. Factors addressed that could have an effect on mental health caregivers include the interaction between the caregiver and the client, the extent of the disability of the caregiver and the stage of the caregiver phase. Several moderators of the effect of treatment on mental health are identified, including socio-economic conditions, social support and coping strategies. This knowledge provides a framework in order to evaluate the sort of treatments that are suitable to support caregivers in multiple circumstances.
